From Sherlock Holmes and the Rune Stone Mystery by Larry Millett (not the book I am currently reading, but the one that was closest to me):
So many questions asked at once seemed to confuse Fogelblad, who stared down at the floor and said quietly: "I do not know. That is the truth."
Rafferty now moved abruptly to another line of questioning, a technique which Holmes himself often used to great effect during interrogations.

Since I'm doing this at work, the book closest to me is a journalism reference book, "Working With Words: A Handbook for Media Writers and Editors" by Brian Brooks, James Pinson and Gaddy Wilson. This section is from the confused words guide:
canvas -- cloth used for tents
canvass -- to cover a district to seek support or opinions
capital -- city
Capitol -- building (note capital letter in all cases)
carat -- unit of weight; used with diamonds and other gems
